We delivered the redevelopment of St Nicholas Square in Colchester, transforming an underused external space into a high-quality public realm. Working to the employer’s design intent and coordinating closely with the design team, we managed the construction and installation of new hard landscaping, retaining structures, balustrades, and improvements to surrounding pedestrian areas. The works were carried out within a busy town-centre environment, requiring careful sequencing and close liaison with the adjacent commercial properties.
The constrained urban setting created challenges such as restricted access, managing deliveries, and maintaining safe pedestrian routes around the site. We overcame these through detailed planning, tight traffic and site-logistics control, and continuous communication with Colchester Borough Council and neighbouring businesses. Ground conditions and existing utilities also required careful handling, which we addressed through early investigation, coordination with statutory bodies, and adapting our methods to ensure the works were delivered safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption.
